NHS Alliance recognises the work of leading CCG managers as part of their 14th annual conference

This year’s award has six categories: GP consortia, urgent care, QIPP, patient and public involvement, consortia manager, and leader

CCGs have been acknowledged by the NHS Alliance in the 2011 Acorn Award ceremony during their national conference in Manchester.

The Acorn Awards are given to primary care health professionals who excel in the efforts they have made to improve services for patients.

This year’s award has six categories: GP consortia, urgent care, QIPP, patient and public involvement, consortia manager, and leader.

Chief executive of the NHS Alliance, Michael Sobanja, commented on this year’s Acorn Award winners, stating: “In a crucial time of change for the NHS, it is refreshing to see so many people grabbing the opportunities and improving services for their patients.”

Notable among the winners were David Thorne, leader of one of the most foremost and well-established Clinical Commissioning Groups in the country, Newcastle Bridges CCG.  Also to be acknowledged was the Health Works practice in the Black Country comprising of 22 GP practices that use an innovative ‘experience-led commissioning’ approach.

Praising the achievements and dedication of those acknowledged, Sobanja added: “It is often much easier to see what is not working, but we need to make sure we celebrate the achievements of our colleagues in primary care and learn from their experience and example of positive change in a tough environment.”

The Gateshead Care Home Programme, Gateshead’s GP commissioning consortia was also awarded the prize for urgent care following their year-long pilot project to support the care home setting to reduce emergency admissions by implementing a preventative approach to healthcare delivery.

Dr Stephen Richards won the “Leader” category as a result of his influence in making GPs “recognise the real benefits of establishing a single commissioning group for the county” and preventing the motion towards smaller GP consortia that the NHS Alliance said “could undermine delivery of the QIPP agenda”.
