Directed at individual practices, CCGs and PCT clusters, the programme is designed to increase the productivity of a practice without altering staff or finances
A new programme unveiled by NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement aims to help doctors and nurses to increase the time they spend with patients in the practice by upping efficiency.
The programme, Productive General Practice, could also help to reduce the number of cancelled appointments, organise appointment scheduling and standardise medical reports in GP practices.
The programme comes at a time when practices are experiencing an increased demand for the quality of their services expected by patients despite falling budgets within the NHS.
Directed at individual practices, CCGs and PCT clusters, the programme is designed to increase the productivity of a practice without altering staff or finances, enabling GPs to do “more with the same resource”.
Ninety per cent of services carried out within the NHS are carried out by general practitioners and so the programme could have a significant effect on the running of practice care.
Dr Jagdeesh Dhaliwal, GP clinical lead of Productive General Practice said: “The current combination of constrained finances and structural change in the NHS offer an opportunity to cut waste and streamline services.
“Patients often applaud the care and compassion of staff whilst lamenting the inefficiency of systems. NHS professionals often express their frustration at the waste of systems that hinder the delivery of care,” says Dhaliwal.
