Labour says Government is losing control

The Government has been accused of losing control as it allocates a further £617m for redundancy payouts for 2011/2012

The new figures have been released this week by the Treasury in their supplementary estimate report on public spending. The report states that the funds are required for “an increase in the level of provisions for redundancy costs” and is based on “an element of the redundancy and non-redundancy costs set out in the revised impact assessment for Health and Social Care Bill.”

According to the Guardian’s live blog from the health and social care bill yesterday, Andy Burnham, the shadow health secretary said: "These eye-watering figures provide clear proof that the Tory-led government has lost control of its NHS re-organisation. The publication of these figures is yet another humiliation for David Cameron and Andrew Lansley".

Labour claim that the £617m is additional funding needed due to the “chaos” caused by the NHS shake up, which the Department of Health denies. The DH said: “This is not new money. Our planned cost for NHS reform remains exactly the same as we published in the impact assessment in September 2011"

The plans were allegedly uncovered by Labour, who said that the funds were surplus to the original anticipated redundancy costs of £1.2bn-£1.3bn laid out by the Government.
