Head of Islamic Medical Association given year suspension

A GP has been suspended after he sent a homophobic letter to a national magazine.

Dr Muhammad Siddiq, the head of the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) has been handed a one year suspension after he claimed that gay people needed the "stick of the law to put them on the right path."

Siddiq went on to claim that homosexuals were the "root cause of many sexually-transmitted diseases".

The doctor also told Pulse magazine that 99 per cent of Muslim GPs shared his views.

Andrew Popat, chairing the GMC hearing, described Siddiq's actions as inappropriate and not in the best interests of his patients.

He added that the letter was "liable to undermine public confidence in the medical profession and liable to bring the profession into disrepute".
